java.lang.NullPointerException fix or workaround?

$

We get this every day in our installation and suspect it might be linked to WHD coming to a complete halt daily.

After we get this exception in our install, within roughly 40 min WHD will stop responding to HTTP requests.  We end up rebooting the server to expeditiously get WHD back online. This happens about twice a day.  We have roughly 12,000 clients, and 40 tech/admins.  The server runs reasonably fast before this happens, then it grinds to a halt and it is sudo reboot time.  Our server runs on AWS and started this when we moved to AWS from Mac OS X (big mistake for other reasons).

Interestingly enough, I just reproduced the problem on the live online demo.

Anyone know how to prevent this? Some kind of workaround or even a fix for the problem?

My suggestion is don't do it. Don't turn them on. Once they are on you can't turn them off easily. Your users will hate you because they get nagged over and over

Sure you can delete the default website not sure about the default app pools.

SQL - map Nodes to Alerts

in SQL, I'm able to find all the information I need to know to about Nodes and Alerts; but I can not find a table or anything that maps the Nodes to alerts.  Trying to find what alerts are applied to each node; I can find this out if the alerts are active, but want to know even when alert is not triggered.

SAM: Possible Error in Custom Table Choose Column section

When creating a Custom Table (and I imagine a custom chart, alert, or anything that uses the "Choose Column" resource seen in the screenshot below) and setting the "Orion Object" to "Component" and then choosing "Current Component Statistics" in the left-hand side of the table, I noticed that the "Percent Component Availability" and "Percent Application Availability" columns are not pointing to actual percent available data.  They seem to actually point to the "Availability" columns which are confusingly synonymous with the "Status" column found throughout pretty much the rest of Orion (who in the SAM team by the way thought it was a good idea name columns with status codes in them "Availability"?  It doesn't even make sense...).

Here is the screenshot and you can see in the Output Preview column in the far right that it just shows 1.

I thought at first maybe I needed to multiply this value by 100 in the "Custom Format" area of the table builder, but when I went into SWQL Studio and found the "Orion.APM.CurrentStatistics" entity I discovered the two columns called "ApplicationAvailability" and "ComponentAvailability" and virtually all of them had a value of 1 with a few others having values of 7 and 11, which are just different status codes.  I think whoever coded these columns into this web control mistakingly labelled those columns as Percent Availability (just more proof that it is extremely confusing to call columns with status code data "Status" almost everywhere in the product and then, in SAM they call them "Availability" instead.  Please just label all columns with status codes in them as "Status"... Please.)

This wouldn't be a big deal of I could choose the Percent Availability (the real percent availability field, not the fake one) from the other grouping on the left called "Current Component Status" (which is where the actual Percent Availability columns are in SWQL Studio, not in the Current Statistics entity), but when I click on "Current Component Status" there is only Description and Timestamp.  That means that is obviously a historical table and the data that was in there is split up into the Historical groupings on the left side of the resource.  It'd be really nice if there was an actual pre-calculated current availability field with something like "Today", "This Week", and "This Month" we could use (kind of synonymous with Peak, Min, Avg fields that we already get for CPU, Memory, and Response Time).

Here is the SWQL Studio data I'm talking about.  These are definitely not percentage fields:

Router BGP/Neighbor Alerting

I have NPM 11.5.2 and I want to setup some alerting so when a peer or connection to our ISP goes down I want to get an email alert stating which node is having the issues and what connection it lost. I am new to SW and still trying to get this whole alerting thing down so any help would be great to get me started on this.

Also, is there a away to create a report that can show all my neighbors and then i can have it posted on one of my summary screens?

Thank cjfranca.. I know how to create node down alerts but I need to know when a bgp peer does down. I hope i am making sense at all. I think there is more to it than just node up/down.

I think if you create a UNDP for to monitor port 179 ( this port monitor  BGP) you can to create a alert for this.

+1 for ZackM.

Got caught out upgrading from 11.5.1 > 11.5.3 right now with the same issues as there was a record in the Db for the additional webserver back in October last year.

(like I can remember that happened LOL)

Now back to the upgrading.

Thanks again

Make sure that you are using up-to-date version of Orion SDK / SWQL studio and connecting to SWIS version 3. Otherwise it is quite probable that you are connecting to SWISv2 and using older schema which is missing this entity.

Hello Gentleman,

Did solarwinds support help you resolve this? I have the same issue and they don't seem to have any coherent answers.

Please let me know

Thank you

Migrating nodes to new installation/database

Alright, hopefully I explain this as clear as possible. I took over our SolarWnds environment (as in dumped in my lap as soon as my credentials were assigned) when I started here and have been learning as I go along. I was basically a replacement to the guy who did the initial installation and configuration. We've had problems on more than one occasion some of which have been solved thanks to everyone here, and certain things still don't work as they should. My plan is to build new servers and install our products fresh, also have a new SQL database created.

The issue I'm running into is finding the best way to take all of our current nodes and import them along with the settings (snmp, etc) currently assigned. Historical at this point doesn't really matter. Are there certain tables we can pull from the current DB and import/migrate into a new DB on the new server and have the new version of orion recognize the nodes? I have a DBA to assist with the move.

The products we use are as follows, as well as having a dedicated MS SQL database server.

NPM

SAM

NCM

NTA

Thanks in advance

I'm trying to do the same thing, and the same result happens - I just get the private IPs. I really want to figure this out. I have a report for work due on March 1st. I've done the queries as listed above and I get very little to no output. I've tried to isolate the data by just working with the Cisco ASAs in our environment that are configured with the external IP, but I'm getting nowhere. Any feedback on how the logic should be constructed would be great. And, honestly, it shouldn't be this hard to do.

When a VM moves from a host to another host in a different VCenter Vman sees the VM in 2 places at once. Should this work properly?
